Rivanna Rectory

Saturday November 1st 1862

I cannot tell you my dearest [friend?]
how grateful your letter was to me.
I have so longed to hear from
you. You had been so constantly
in my thoughts. It was why this morning
at breakfast, that I had been talking
to [Sis?] Julie of you - & then up came
Bland & dear Monty. I almost felt
as tho' I had a little piece of your
dear Mothers. I hate to give dear
Zet up, I felt she would be such a
comfort this winter. She reminds me
a little[underscored] of you. I do want to see you
so much, & only [wanting?] strength has
kept me from that pleasure. I may
yet so like to spend part of a day
with you, before long - & shall try to
gain enough strength for that
at least. I just put [you?] in the [hands?]

[2]

of our [?] God & Father, [beeching?]
his love & tender mercy may keep
sustain & guide you precious
friend - Father said he did
not know you were in town
until the evening he left. Sis
Julie is with me now, she probably will
go to R_ [on?] Thursday & see you some.
I send you some sweet [loves?] Sis
Hilty sent me for you. Tell me if
you have [Jacks?] [pr...?] for the
little one. I have [engaged?] an old
[t...?] cloth for you & will make up
the articles for you if you send
me word what size you like.
I wish I could help you for I am
[?] to [?] some new - so send
me some thing. Have you any
kind of dressing gown, for I could
so easily send you mine, it is
a silk one & could be made to look
very nicely let me know about it -

[Marginalia Pg 1 left side and top]

& darling thank God that you have some thing to
look [forward?] to ,
& that your good
husband can
be with you to
comfort & help
you. [I...?] feel
more than provoked
that accident[underscored]
[should?] have
prevented his
getting through his
examination, but I

[Marginalia Pg 1 right side]

[know?] you[underscored] know that too many consider the examining board
a mere farce - to look on your husband not passing as any thing

serious. [Mr. Masons father?] said he would not be
examined
by them.
This is

My kind
regards
to Dr. C.
