Williamsburg October 5th 1861 Saturday night

I am feeling very badly to-night but shall as I hear Captain (Gandlish?) will see you to-morrow I must let you hear from me, for i know after a week, for it is almost that, in silence that you are anxious to hear something of my condition, and I can tell you it is pretty bad. After a week of anxiety, and constant nursing and attention I have been called upon to part with that good, faithful girl (Milly?). She died this morning of Typhoid fever, combined with an effection of the lungs. Dr. Simple has been, in addition, to Dr. Mercer, attending her for days, and I have the satisfaction of knowing that every thing was done for her recovery that could be suggest- =ed either by the skill of her Physicians or the anxiety of her Misses. Night before last I spent with her, and was to have taken my place by her side again to-night. Mammy having occupied the post last night. I cannot imagine what I am to do without her, she had become so essential to my comfort as to be a
