As soon as the balance of my command, the 15th Ala
& 16th Miss. under Cols Cantey & Posey, came on the field
I joined them to the 21st Ga. and the mist then
allowing a better view, I adopted the suggestion of Brig. Gen
Trimble & marched them to the right. This movement was
immediately followed by a retrograde one of the enemys
soon converted into a flight as the attack conducted by
Maj. Gen Jackson in person on the South of the town
was carrying every thing before it. The affair was over be-
tween 8 & 9 o'clock a.m. Lieut Latimer was in command
of the Courtney Arty & was exposed during the whole
affair to a heavy cannonade. This young officer was
conspicuous for the coolness, judgement, & skill with
which he managed his battery, fully supporting the high
opinions I had formed of his merits. Capt Brockenborough
brought his battery into action at a later moment & handled
it with energy & effect. The brilliant service rendered
by Taylor's Brigade being immediately under the ob-
servation of the Commanding General, is not included
in my report of operations. Except the Md Regt & the
cavalry, the attack on the East of the town was made
by Gen Trimble's Brigade the 7th. I am indebted to
that Officer on more than one occasion for valuable
counsel & suggestions. The 8th Brigade, Gen Taylor's
