Maj R. S. Dabney, [A. A?]. Gen Valley District

Major

I have the honor
to report as follows the movements of my Division, on
the 23rd, 24th, & 25th from Front Royal to Winchester.
The attack & decided results at Front Royal, were
the fruits of the personal supervision & planning of Maj.
Gen Jackson. I will merely state that the attack was
made by the 1st Md Regt Col Bradley T. Johnson,
& Major Wheats Special Battalion, supported by the 6th, 7th
& 8th La. Regts. Col Kelly, 8th La, leading his Regt
through [the River?] under fire of artillery & musketry.
The pursuit which was being successful was under
the direction of Brig. Gen Geo H. Steuart, Md Line, & was
carried on by the 2nd Cavy, Lt Col Watts Comdg, & the
6th under Lt Col Flournoy. These Officers pursued with
courage & energy, capturing two pieces of Arty, the Field
& Staff, & most of the Federal Md Regt.

On the 24th the Brigades of Gens Elzey & Taylor, were
detached from my position on the Front Royal & Win-
chester Pike, & [carried?] by the Major Gen Comdg with
his Divn of the Army, to the road leading from Strasburg
to Winchester. [i.e. the Valley Pike]. The service there
rendered was not under my observation, but the Federal
papers speak of the havoc produced in their Cavy by
the La. Brigade. Brig. Gen Geo. H. Steuart with the
2nd & 6th Cavy cut the enemy's line at New Town
between Strasburg & Winchester, capturing some
hundreds of prisoners, many waggons, &c. The 7th
