were killed while trying to dislodge a company or
two from he R. Rd depot. Both were said to be very fine
Officers. When we first approached Front Royal, even
before the Cavy drove in the the pickets, we saw two
or three citizens scampering away across the fields.
Just as our skirmishers became engaged Henry [Boyd?]
Douglas, called my attention to a lady who, having made
a circuit to the Eastward to avoid the Yankees,
came running towards me from the town. He & [J?] S
Pendleton rode to meet her, & she sent word by them
to Genl Jackson "to push on – that only one Regt was
in the town, & that completely surprised – if we
pressed on we could get the whole." In consequence
of his information, we were vigorously pushed forward,
the attack being made with less precaution than
it was before & more rapidly. It was Miss Belle Boyd,
who was to my eye, very pleasant & lady like in
appearance & certainly had neither "red hair, freckled
face or large mouth" as the N.Y. Herald said she had.
She seemed embarrassed by the novelty of her position
but very anxious for us to push on.

At Winchester

This Division left for Winchester at 7 a.m. the morning
after Front Royal- being left behind by Genl Ewell
