& hospitality filled me with the warmest
feelings of gratitude & patriotism & I
congratulated myself that I had had
the inestimable privilege of fighting
for a country inhabited by such a
people. But after this specimen of
Carolina hospitality I must add that
at two or three taverns where I spent a day
or two I recd the greatest kindness – indeed
had I not known so well where I was
I might well have fancied that I had
fallen once more among the kind peo-
ple of your own noble state.

What has become of those very kind
friends who were in the habits of visiting
the hospital with you? Their faces &
voices are almost as familiar & as
dear to me as those of my own im-
mediate household & will be as long
remembered.
