7 July [18]63 – 5 Hanover St. 4 p.m.

Dear Ann - About 2 hours ago Matthew informed that news has come thro’ two channels & apparently authentic – that Vicksburg was surrendered at 1 p.m. on the 4th July! – And gold in consequence, after opening this morn[in]g at 38, fell until it marked 32 1/2 ; but I understand it has since rallied somewhat.

I have today a letter from Miss Lippett: “6 July – My dear friend. Let me first thank you for permitting me to consult & possess your sympathy when I was troubled about the young lady who was anxious to get home [India] – she sailed – probably on Wednesday – from Boston, in an American vessel on the advice of the British Consul.

I intended to have written a few lines to Miss [Ann] M[aury] enclosing the accompanying letter of Miss Baldwin, as both Mrs. Hay & Miss B[aldwin] wish to have the judgment of your Sister on the subject of the letter. You can read it too.

I am now suffering with a severe at= =tack of influenza, which affects my eyes with increased disability to see; & you [?] excuse this very hasty note & believe me mo[st] gratefully yours L. A. Lippett Love to dear Miss [Ann] M[aury] when you write.”

As soon as I had read Miss Bald= =win’s letter, I thought it such as one as Miss Lippett ought not to part with, without preserving a copy though, so I have copied [it]

all [underscored] to send to her tomorrow; & you can keep the original, [underscored] & if you like, lay it before your friend the B[isho]p of London! I suppose.

Contrary to Matthews expectation yesterday, & still more contrary to my own to-day – especially since this news of the surrender of Vicksburg – he left the office 1/4 past 3 to-day – to take the Mary Powell at 1/2 past 3 for Cornwall [NY], & return to town the day after tomorrow. (when we may have the Asia’s letters, as she reached Halifax this morning.)

This Vicksburg news, of course, makes me feel badly at we not having sold more freely of Cotton on this day week – the top of the market.

People in England will feel amazingly surprised at these two important results in favor of the North – the defeat of [General Robert E. ] Lee (which daily increases in magnitude & importance) & the fall of Vicksburg. y[our]s affectionately R[utson] Maury
