My dear Uncle,

I recd yours of the 17th July and hasten to answer. I was astonished to learn that you had not received the different letters I have written you. I have written you 3 or 4.

I sent you $100- by M. Kelly & was extreamly sorry to learn that she had lost it. I hardly know who to trust. As soon as I go to Richmond I will collect what is due you from Mr. Covington & send it by some trusty person. Write me word if I must exchange it for state notes? I will have to pay about 3 ½ - 4 dollars for one.

About Tom. I hardly know how to advise you. Negroes are very high & I suppose he would

bring, at least $3000 if not $4000 – In state notes about $1000 or $1200. He will not be allowed to pass our lines & therefore he could not go down to see you at Christmas. No Ne= =gro is allowed to cross the lines. If you desire to sell him, however, I will attend to it for you, or get Cousin Euclid to do so for you, just as you desire. Write me.

I & my family are well & send a great deal of love. Harriett & Tommy are also well. Cousin Eu= =clid was well when I heard from him.

I hope the war will soon be over & we all get back home. We have whipped them in the west. Give love to all & believe me Your affectionate nethew D. J. Goodwin P.S. May God protect you & keep you in health.
