Wind S& SE Cloudy. Finished Planting Corn
Friday 2
Wind SW Clear. Servants planting their own
Corn in New Ground near the quarters.
A Yankee Gun Boat came into Mobjack Bay & very
near me. She fired two shot at Ware Point
but did not land. Our forces at York & Gloster Point
are going to evacuate those places to night & retire.
This whole country will then be left defenceless and
at the mercy of the Enemy. Warner started for Richmond
in his Buggy driving his horse and my Bay horse. He
took Davy with him. Gabriel went as far as Capahosic in
Mr Hogg’ wagon to carry his baggage. Mrs Hogg moved
part of her things to her Father’s Mr Hogg is at Gloster Point

Wind NE. Cloudy m.g. Clear in Ev.g Negroes planting their Corn.
Our forces did not evacuate last night as was expected
[Hevy?] firing all day & night. A requesition was made for
my Wagon & horse to,day. I sent Ben with them to Gloster Point.
Mrs Goggin started for Richmond, Gabriel returned from Capahosic.
Warner want on in his Burry Mrs Hogg moved to her Fathers a part
of her things. Heard there were a good many desertions from Gloster Point
among the Guinea companies.

Sunday 4
Wind NW Cloudy. We staid at home.
York Town and Gloster Point were evacuated last
night. The troops from G.P. retreated through Gloucester
those from York up the Peninsula.
Eight steamers went up York River yesterday and
fired as they went up. There was heavy & rapid
firing of Field artillery & musketry above York Town
in the Evening. I suppose it was an attack upon
the rear of our retreating army. We are entirely
cut off now from all communication with the rest of Va
indeed the rest of the world. Amid all the evils
which surrounds us I yet hope for a turn of fortune in our
favor and a bright future for our country.
Let us fight on, success must crown our effort at last.

Wind E Rained all day Hands could do nothing. A tremendous
battle was faught To,day near Williamsburg. I think we must
have whipped the Yankees badly For by the sound they must
have been driven back several miles and at night the
firing seemed to be from small arms as if Cavalry was
in persuit.
