April 1862

Friday 11th Wind NW & NE, Clear & cold. Cut wood. Opened drains Martha & Bet here in m.g. No news of the war from any quarter. All quiet on the Peninsula. I have sore throat and bad cold. Warner is very unwell & our baby quite sick Ten or fifteen negroes still sick with Measels. We have had 35 cases

Saturday 12 Wind NE & E. Clear. Harrowing Corn land & opening drains Got wood. I went to York Town. We drove the Enemy this [mg?] from a House & line of fence just outside of our Entrenchment & burnt the house & fence from which the enemys sharp shooter annoyed us very much to other fighting on the Peninsula. Beauregard has again whipped the Enemy at Corinth Missi & taken four thousand Prisoners.

x Don Carlos ^ their Comdg General is reported to be killed x Doubtful The Merimac came to Hampton Roads Thursday & captured three Brigs and a schooner without firing a gun. The Monitor & their other war Vessels took shelter under the Guns of Fortress Monroe.

Sunday 13 Wind NE & E clear & cold. We staid at home. Warner and the Baby bett[er] Genl Joseph E Johnston is said to be on the Peninsula & we now have a larger force there. A tremendous battle must be fought in a few days, as the Yankees are supposed to have a large army there. Our troops are in fine spirits. Four War Steamers are in York River.

Monday 14th Wind SE Clear. Ploughing Three Ploughs. Opening drains Cutting wood. Killed a Mutton. The Yankees shelled Guinea this Evening from their steamers for two hours or more throwing about 200 shells. They hurt nothing except one old sow of Wm Minors.

Tuesday 15 Wind SE Cloudy in mg & rained a little, clear afterwards. Ploughing three ploughs, hauled wood & Rails with Ox cart Opening drains. I went to Gloster Point and York The Yankees shelled Gloster Point at long range & long intervals. They fired some 40 or 50 times but hurt nothing I went to York to see Robt Calwell, Marias cousin who is in the 2nd Florida Regt. he is very well

Wednesday 16 Wind E Clear. Ploughing three Ploughs. Opening drains. Shelled Corn. Picked out seed Corn. Mr Bryan dined here There was a heavy cannonading this m.g. at York Town, & in the Evening a most tremendous fight going on below York.

Thursday 17 Wind SW Clear. Ploughing Two Ploughs. Began to plant Corn. I went to Gloster Point. The Yankees attacked our lines yesterday at [Wynne’s?] Mill three times vigoursly in large force & were repulsed with great slaughter each time. Our loss was 25 killed & 45 wounded. They made no attack to,day. Their loss is said to be very heavy.
