April 1862

Saturday 5th
Wind W & SW Rained in m.g. Clear afternoon. Ploughing
three Ploughs. Throwing up & turfing bank. Got wood
Opening drains. Heavy firing began at York Town at
10, O,clock, warner & myself went to Gloster Point
An artillery fight was kept up all day at York & they say
all along our lines from York Town to James River. Three steamers
were in York River just below York but out of range of our guns
taking soundings & shelling the woods. No one hurt on our
side so far as I could learn. We took two Prisoners. Officers
of a Main Regt. The report the Yankees are in large force
Tis supposed a great battle will be fought To,morrow.
Our troops are in fine spirits and will made a great fight
tho greatly outnumbered. The Infantry from Gloster Point
have all got to York Town. Charley & Lizzy sick with Measels.

Sunday 6
Wind W Clear. I went to Gloster Point. Two steamers came within range
of one of our Batteries below York firing shell which fell short. We fired
Two shot at them from a Rifled gun which went over them when they
soon got out of range. There are six steamers & 5 schooner in York River
and nearly a hundred sail below of steamers & sail vessels.
