Tuesday 11th
Wind SW &E. Clear. Ploughing Two Ploughs. Hauling out
and scattering Manure. Making fence.
Our Iron clad Steamer Virginia late the Merimac came from
The Navy Yard Saturday night to Hampton Roads, and sunk the
US Frigate Cumberland, Burnt the US Frigate Congress and
*captured the US Steamer Minnessota*. She subsequently had
an encounter with US Iron Clad Steamer Erricson which she
damaged & drove under the guns of Fortress Monroe. The Virginia
is said to be uninjured. She must be a grand success
*This is not correct the rest is, The Minnessota was badly hurt but not taken

Wednesday 12
Wind W Clear. Began to sow Oats, sowed 10 1/2 Bushels
Hauling out & Scattering Manure. Younger & Nick cutting wood
Lucy sick with cold & fever. Three little negroes have the measels.
Charleys Throat & Mouth dreadfully ulcerated & he is quite sick

Thursday 13
Wind E Cloudy & rained in Ev.g. & at night. Sowing Oats
Hauling out & scattering manure. Working in garden.

Friday 14
Wind N & NE Cloudy. Rained last night, land too wet to
Sow Oats but I am sowing the dryest places, threw
back ditch banks. Got 40 bushels of Oats of Selden.

The Militia of the State is called out by Govr Letchr
those from this county are owned to Williamsburg
