Wednesday 19 Wind SW. Clear. Breaking up Middles with four ploughs. Hilling Corn with hoes. Our little baby very unwell. Sent for Dr Cary to see it. Richard also unwell. Col Page sent a note to Warner asking him to order out the Melitia as the Enemy were said to be advancing in large force on York Town and nearly all the troops had been sent there from Gloster Point. He dispatched orders & went immediately to Gloster Point, but when he arrived there he found the troops had all returned. Col Magruder was in York Town, having retreated from Bethel with his whole force (upwards of 3000) from present indications very uselesly or morse. – as the Yankee force is said to be but 65 that were known to be advancing. He is said to have retreated precipitatedly leaving a large quantity of camp Equipate &c behind Warner returned home about two Oclock at night sick.
