                                                    Camp Winder, April 3d 1862

Dear Claudius -

We write you this to get

you to go up to Mothers and get us some good tobacco for chewing and smoking. Also, send us every egg that you can get, that is good. You can send us anything else that you think would keep good until it reaches here. We would be glad if you would [smuggle?] us in a little good liquor of some kind but whether good or not send some if it can be had. Try and send us some Sage if possible, we have been expecting a box from you, which has not come to hand; why have you not sent it? Rob has been very sick with the measles, but is improving, and will be about again before long. I am very in good health myself and hope to remain so, and Camp is a bad place when sick. Many of the men are on the sick list, and one them ([Jordham?] Wright) is thought to be very badly off. This is written pretty much by Rob & myself. There is no earthly chance to get furlough now and so I can say when you may expect us. [Pick?] a lock to the chest or box, and send the key in a letter, write also the same day you start in. Did Rob's mother ever receive his letter and if so, why did she not answer it? Direct your letter to the "Care of Capt. Henry Spencer, 3d Regiment Va. Artillery Camp Winder, Richmond Va." and give us all the news.

                                                        Yours truly,
                                                         W. H. Forbes

Dear Claud

I wrote you sometime last week but

am afraid you did not get my letter as the mail was robbed. I saw Knight [Saundery?] Monday evening and he gave me the list of hands that were in need of shoes. I will try and let as many know as [possible the condi- tion of their land. Col Richard. H. William says you must furnish his hand with some corn meal as he does not wish for them to want for something to eat. D. H. [Morely?] says to furnish his hand with a bushel of meal not all at once but at times as you think best for him to have it.

The most of the men I have seen want you

if [nicepay?] to furnish their hand with some corn meal
