Wind W. Clear. We staid at home. Maria
and the Baby are both getting along very well
There are all sorts of rumors, One does not know
what to believe. There has been fighting in
Baltimore, and portions of the Massachusetts and of
the New York & 7th Regts were taken by the citizens in
passing through, lives were lost on both sides.

Monday 22
Wind SW. Clear. Harrowing with tow Harrows
Scattering Manure. Hauling Rails.
War has commenced sure enough. The Navy Yard
is said to be taken by Va troops, but every thing
combustible burnt Steamer West Point stopped in Norfolk.
Gloster Troops cant get transportation and are at the Grove
on James River. My Brother sent an [Express?] ordering
them back to the county. Militia called out about
300 Men at CH. today. My Brother (The Col of the County) has established
his head quarters there. Harpers Ferry & 18 Thousand
Sand of Arms taken by Va Troops, Major Genl W B
Taliaferro in command at Norfolk. A thousand rumors
from all quarters. Very few of them true.
