April 1863

Wednsday 1st   Wind W Clear & cold, Got wood, land too wet
to do any thing. I was very sick yesterday & am
very unwell today. The Yankees are carrying things
with a high hand. They took John Taliafino out of his
bed Friday night & carried him in a Gun boat & gave
no reason for his arrest. They searched Mr W P Smiths house
yesterday & carried him away in their Gun boat without assigning
any reason. They returned to his place today & burnt his
Barns. They also shelled & burned Dr Byrd’s Barns this Ev.g
I have not heard that they gave any reason for doing it.
I have been expecting them to arrest me ever since Monday
when those boys went to them & I learn told them all kinds
of lies. They said they were coming after me Tuesday.

Thursday 2   Wind W&SW Clear & windy. Ploughing one Plough
lent & hauled some wood Women at work in Garden.
The Yankee Gun boats did not make their appearance today.
I sent my horses away Monday to prevent the Yankees from getting them

Friday 3.   Wind W Blos a storm. Sowed Oats, Sent to Mill
Women worked in garden
The Yankee Cavalry started to arrest me but the Cols horse
was taken sick at Mr Clarkes so they turned back.
