Friday 29th

Wind SE Clear. Hauling our & scattering Manure
Cleaning out ditches, Joshua & James & the Mules still at
Mr Sinclair’s. I went to Gloster Point in company
with Mr Clarke Mr B Seawell & Mr Curtis to see ascertain what
the Yankees intended to do. What they meant by these
expeditions in Gun Boats & through the country & whether they
intended to take the property of Citizens or seize & imprison
Their persons. Col Davis the Comdt assured us that
he did not intend to disturb peacible Citizens in person or
property & would not permit Marranding, and if any of
his solders straggled foo and committed depredations & got
their heads broke for so doing, they should receive no
protection from him. When asked if he intended to take
provisions for the subsistance of his forces, He said “he had no orders
to do so and should certainly not do it without orders” but that
the Govenment claimed the right of subsisting their troops in from the
Enemy’s Country but had heretofore rarely exercized the right and
then only under necessity. That if exercised it would be done by
an officer with written Authority from the commanding officer of
of the district which he must shew, and must give a Receipt
