August 1862

Tuesday 5th

Wind SW, Clear and very hot. Laying by Corn. Maria & the children rode to Wilson’s Creek in Ev.g.

Wednesday 6

Wind SW mg. SE Ev.g Clear and very hot. Laying by Corn. Twenty three of Mr Bryans Negroes were arrested last night of board Frank Wests Sloop, on their way to the Yankees. They were carried up to Richmond.

Thursday 7

Wind S & SE Clear & hot. Laying by Corn with hoes

Friday 8

Wind SW Clear. The hottest day this year. My Thermom=

eter is broken so do not know what ^ it would indicate. Finished Laying by Corn, not by completion but abandonment. That left out is so indifferent it would not pay for the work. All of Tazewell Thompson’s negroes have gone to the Yankees and 88 of JS Dean’s leaving only 5 or 6 old and infirm ones.

Saturday 9

Wind SW Clear & excessively hot. Cleaning up Barn Yard preparatory to threshing Wheat. Began to put down Machine but found a part of it broken which will have to be repaired before I can use it. Hauled in some wheat & shucked it on the yard. I went to C Ho. The Yankees went to JS Dean’s last Saturday and stole his Carriage horses, Bacon, Beeves, Muttons, Groceries, Whiskey, Potatoes &c. They also took 2 Guns & a Pistol

Sunday 10th

Wind S.W. Clear till Ev.g. then a Thunder cloud but no rain here, there must have been a heavy rain north of this. We staid at home. I rode to Selden’s in m.g. His son Lewis died at Harrisonburg the 1st Inst of Typhoid Fever. He was a very fine youth just 18 years old. Three of Selden’s negroes (Two Girls & a Woman) were taken up last night on their way to York. [Jay?] & Keith Sinclair intend starting for Richmond with them this Ev.g.

Mr & Mrs Selden are ^ in Richmond with Bob who has not yet recovered.

Monday 11

Wind SW & SE Clear & hot [in][crossed out] Putting down threshing Machine. Davis mended a part of ti that was broken hauling wheat & shucking it in Barn Yard.

Tuesday 12

Wind S & SE Clear & very hot m.g. Thunder Cloud after and some rain. Hauled in wheat & shucked it. Worked Peas in Orchard & near Potatoe Patch. Mr Curtis & Sister Harriet spent the day here. Got some Papers Warner sent by Templeman. The Arkansas got around near Baton Rouge the 8th & had to be blown up. We won an important victory at a place Called Tazewell near Cumberland Gap in Tenn
