Friday 1st

Wind SW M.g. E ev.g. Clear. finished breaking up Middles
Laying by Corn with hoes. Mr Selden started for Harrison=
burg Rockingham County to see his Son Lewis who is very
ill there. He belonged to Ashly’s Cavalry

Two deserters from the Yankee army (Frenchmen) passed here
yesterday.

Saturday 2

Wind SW in the mg SE Evg Clear. Laying by Corn wit hoes.
Deal mended my Machine where it was broken by Mr Sinclairs men
I went to the C.H. & carried Mr Sinclair. Richard got
home from Belle Farm where he has been for a week.

Sunday 3

Wind SE Cloudy & rained about 1 O.clk. we staid at home.
Mr Curtis & Joe Bryan dined here. Mr & Mrs Clarke here in Ev.g.

Monday 4

Wind SW Clear. Laying by Corn with hoes. I went to Ct Ho.
(Court day) No very important War news. Genl Pendleton
with 50 or 60 pieces of Field Artillery Cannonaded the Yankee Fleet
in James River for about Two hours Thursday night & scattered it.
What damage he did the Vessels is not known. He had one
man killed and 5 or 6 wounded by an accident to one of his
own Guns. A Battle is expected to occur very soon between
“Stone Wall” Jackson and the infamous savage wretch Pope, when I
hope & believe he will get his deserts. Got a sack of salt for 6 Bus Wheat.
