little girl ^ in the carriage and had her buried. Farley Taylor & Hally here. There are thousands of rumors of the battle of Tuesday (All favorable to us) but nothing definate or reliable. There were [“Fire works”][underlined] last night at York Town. I suppose they are celebrating the 4th July.

They have been ^ burning & blowing up every thing at York and Gloster Point To,day, of course they are preparing to evacuate both posts.

Wind SW Clear. In Harvest. The wheat is scarcely worth cutting. There was a stampede of 19 Negroes from Selden’s and a larger number from Mr Clarke’s last night. Some of them [Sund][crossed out] were captured by our People and put in jail at the C.H. We whipped the Yankees certainly and tis said they have been driven “into” white Oak Swamp” with only 48. hours provisions, and being surrounded by our forces will be compelled to capitulate. Tis said we took all their Cannon except six pieces.
