Thursday 29th

Wind E Clear. Replanted Corn in Mr Hogg’s lot. Filled up holes in the stable floor with earth. The men Cut wood. Washed the wool. Maria spent the day at Belle Farm. Farley is very unwell 21 of their Negroes have gone to the Yankees. Maria carried her a letter from Fielding brought by Dr. T. I believe. I recd a letter from Warner, he is in Richmond & well. Mr Curtis got one from Jack. He has taken Ben as his servant all of the letters received concur in the opinion that our prospects are brighter every where than they have been for some time and that the

Heard from a man from Wmsburg that we attacked McClellans ^ advanced troops last Monday & drove them back Eight Miles, with great loss to the. Banks has certainly been driven out of the Valley & Jackson is pursuing him into Maryland. [Lincoln has called on the Northern States for Troops to][underlined] [defend “Washington & the Sacred Soil of Pennsylvania from the polluting head][underlined] [of the Rebels”][underlined] & Massachusetts says I learn [that she wont send any more.][underlined]

Saturday 31st

Wind S & E Cloudy. It rained very hard all last night & the earth is perfectly saturated with water. Could do nothing except cut some wood. The Children went to Mr Curtis’s with the Sinclair children to eat strawberries. Mr C sent me a Philadelphia Enquirer of 27the. The Northern People are in a perfect panic. Banks has been certainly driven into Maryland at Williamsport with severe loss, and came near being captured with his whole command, which he may be yet, as Jackson may cross the Potomac & persue him into Maryland
