Friday 20th
Wind W in Mg N in Evg. Clear & cooler. Ploughing One
Plough. Sent Wagon to Mill. Cutting Xmas Wood
Making winter Hog Shelter. Raking wood’s litter
Our little Baby very unwell. The news from England
in regard to the arrests of Messr Mason & Slidell and their
Secretaries is of a very exciting character. The whole
of England seems to be in a perfect state of fury at the
desecration of their “Flag”. It is said a Queen’s Messenger
has come to Washington with dispatches to Lord Lyons
to demand that those Gentlemen shall at once be placed
on a British man of War and an Ample apology made
or he is to demand his Pasports. England is sending large
numbers of Men & Arms to Canada and threatens as an
initiatory step to Brake the Blockade of the Southern Ports, to recognise the Southern Confederacy
and to Blockade those of the North. That is all we want.
We of the South can manage the Yankees on land but not
having a Navy They are superior to us and annoy us greatly by
Water. If England does really do what is threatened our independance
is as good as achieved – and that in a short time.
