September 1861

Friday 6th Wind SE Clear. Cutting Tops. The Soldiers here are all nearly well. Two of Dr Byrds negroe Boys took Selden’s boat and went off to the Yankees last Tuesday night.

Saturday 7 Wind SE Clear. Cutting Tops. the only news from the wars is that am expedition under Genl Butler composed of some 8 or 10 Vessels Four Thousand men & 100 Guns captured Fort Hateras & Clark on the North Carolina coast & took six or seven Hundred ^ of our men prisoners, among them Comd Barrow of our Navy. Per contra Genl Floyd defeated and routed a large Ohio force in Western Va killing 67 & taking 200 prisoners. It occured at Cross Lanes in Nicholas county. Genl Beauregard’s forces are in sight of Washington and heavy skirmishing daily occuring An important Battle must be fought soon.

Sunday 8 Wind NE Cloudy. It rained all the afternoon We staid at home. I heard this Evg that Major Goggin came to Sister Anns Friday Evg from Wmsburg. He returns in the Mg.

Monday 9th Wind SE Clear. Began to pull Fodder Mr Heslin sick. Bet, Hally, & Mr Curtis’s children here to,day.

Tuesday 10 Wind E Clear. Pulling Fodder. Maria went to Wilson’s Creek & spent the day our little Baby is very unwell. A Mr Reese of the La Batn came for the soldiers who have been sick here. Mr Heslin quite sick now.

Wednesday 11 Wind SE Clear. Pulling Fodder.

Thursday 12 Wind NW. cloudy in mg & rained till 10 Oclk then Clear Making Summer Farm Pen in mg. Pullin g Fodder in Ev.g. Mr Houck & Mr Galpin went with Mr Reese to join their Battalion. Mr Canny & Mr Heslin still here. Mr Gordon here in m.g.

Friday 13 Wind W Clear. Pulling & Shocking Fodder [Fort Hater][crossed out] Nothing new from the wars.

Saturday 14 Wind SW. Clear. Pulling & shocking fodder. I went to Mr Bryans to see Mr Geo Gordon late of Louisa now a private in the 5th North Carolina Regt He is sick there.
