July 1861

Saturday 27th Wind SW. Cloudy. Working Corn with hoes

                          went to [w][crossed out]

Maria and the children [spent the day at][crossed out] Wilsons creek [?][overwirtten] yesterday and will remain for a few days. Our little Baby is very unwell and we hope a change will benefit her.

Sunday 28th Wind SE Clear and warm. I was at home Maria & the children went to church from Wilsons Creek and retuned home in Ev.g. the Baby very much improved. I am very unwell. I was on guard all last night & am suffering with an affection of my bowels.

Monday 29 Wind SE. Cloudy. Working Corn with hoes. Nothing of any importance rom the Seats of War. The Yankees are trying to lie themselves out of their Threshing the best way they can so as to get recruits to fill up the hiatus in their army caused by death wounds & captures. (The lost 12 or 15 Thousand in the battle at Manassa) besides at least 20 or 30 Thousa[nd] of their three months Volunteers time has expired, and they are nearly all going home. Fresh Southern troops are daily flocking to our standards.

Monday 29th Warner brought Twenty of the Melitia to guard this Point. Negroes are escaping and there is a Yankee War Steamer lying in the Bay near the mouth of Severn River. She captured Capt

Marshalls sloop last night with Eight persons ^ Marshall himself escaped in a boat. He was trying to run the blockade from the “Eastern shore”

                              20 in number

[They are][overwritten] The Militia ^ are encamped in tents on Turtle Neck Landon Davies has command of them. He takes his meals with me.

Tuesday 30 Wind S Clear. Working Corn with hoes. Maria & the children went to Sister Anns in Evg. Bet is getting well.

Wednesday 31 Wind SE Clear and very hot. Working Corn with hoes. I went to Gloster Point to see after my two boys Joshua & Langborn whom I sent yesterday to work on the fortifications, under a requisition from Genl McGouder
