Wind SE Clear & very hot. Cultivating and
laying by Corn. Rain last night

Wind SW. Alternately Clear & cloudy very hot.
Cultivating and laying by Corn. John & Milly sick
Twenty drafted Melitia came to keep guard on
my Point to day but the Governor has issued a
Proclamation calling out the whole of the Militia so
they were permitted to go home by my Brother
He went to Richmond To.day

Thursday 18
Wind S Clear & hot. Cultivating & laying by Corn.
I went to Gloster Point & brought a sick soldier a
Mr Shields of Louisianna to Mr Bryon’s. Genl Garnetts army
in the North West (Randolph county) has encountered serious
desasters. Lt Col Pegram at Rich Mountain with 300 Men
was surrounded by 12 or 15 Thousand men under Genl McClellan & nearly his whole command killed wounded & taken
Garnett coming to his relief met the Enemy at Cheat River where
he poor Nobel fellow was killed, but his command retreated
in good order & the Enemy also fell back. Capt Skipwith of
the Powhatan Rifles & Lt Boyd of Buckingham killed at Rich Mtn
& about 60 privates. Tis said they fought desperately. Lt Col
Pegram taken prisoner.
