[essay continued from previous page]

Among our friends, we were the center of attention, even strangers would come up and ask if we were the girls that were going to appear before the closed Tribunal. We replied modestly that we were.

Classes that day seemed unusually boring and long, but they passed in time; the afternoon dragged by uneventfully; and finally evening arrived. We ate dinner earlier than usual and were in our room, waiting, long before the appointed hour. The hands on the clock reached seven o'clock, seven-thirty, eight; by nine o'clock we had abandoned all pretense of study and were just sitting....and waiting.

At nine-fifteen we were startled by a gentle tap on the door. It was on Nancy, however, visiting from across the hall. We invited her in, but explained that the Tribunal might not look kindly on any visitors. She sat down rather sheepishly and explained that she had come to talk about that.

"You see," she said, "there isn't going to be a Tribunal tonight."

I suppose we looked slightly puzzled, for she went on hastily.

"It's all a joke. Audrey and I were planning to put on black robes and drag you out blindfolded, to some deserted place on campus and leave you there. Too many people found out about it, though, and we decided we might get in trouble. You aren't mad, are you?"

We're still planning our revenge. Any suggestions?
