Dear Sir
I expected before this to have received back from you the letter from Matthew Fontaine which you borrowed, & that you would have informed we what action, if any, you had taken upon it; for I fully understood that you would use that letter for the benefit of the writer only.
I am the man "\anxious - I think the word is\" on this point, as I bear in mind an observation of yours, in which I do not concur, to the effect - "that as, or if, M. F. intended to join the South, he was better in prison" - Now I do not think we are at liberty to do evil that good may come of it.
There is also another reason why I should wish that letter to be used with great discretion: & that is, that it might be considered a cause of difference, amongst others, that the English Consul should have given such a pass or permit by the English & American Governments: & if it has escaped observation, I should not like, unless to serve my Nephew, to be obliged to produce it for his justification
truly yours
(signed) Horatio N. Hughes.
