Colo J Lyle Clarke
Dear Clarke

My desire is to
get as many companies without [resorting?] to the
detail as possible to make up the Crops of "Sharp
Shooters," as for the very obvious reason, to prevent
taking men out of organizations already
[perfected?]. This is a matter of course extremely
distasteful to regimental Commanders to loose
their men, & I do not wish to incur the
unkind excitement consequent upon the detail
if it can be avoided. I have been exceed-
-ingly anxious to get up the corps & have been
doing my best. I [induced?] the companies
already in it to do so. – and if I can get others I shall,
                                                     resource
then when this [comes?][struck-through] ^ is exausted, [we?] [mey?] with
[some?] [propriety?] [resort?] to detail. The conscripts
already at the [?], or the larger portion of them
                                                 as previously written.
I design to fill up the companies not yet full ^
When the parole prisoners come, if they do, we
can let them take the place of the conscripts, and
in this way have material for the formation of
new companies. I have a pistol which be longs to
a man in charge of Capt Vawter, who came from
the enemy, & for which he asks 25 dollars, I enclose the
amount which please give to Capt Vawter for the man
