The [ratler?] got the advantage of us and caused the Sixth corps to suffer pretty severly with the heavy plants of the Rebels although they did not deserve to follow the examples of the 8th and 19th corps and with bravery they went in and trove the Revels out of the rifle pits again which the Rebels took from the 8th and 19th corps and fifty three peices of artillery and also seven thousand prisoners were taken and the Rebels completly repulsed by the Sixth corps but our corps lost heavy. The report is that it lost thirty five hundred men in killed and wounded but if it wasent for the Sixth corps the Rebels would be in Maryland by this time and I let you know that our Regt got a new flag yesterday for the bravery we don at the Battle of Winchester and our General mate a speech to us.
