Govr John Letcher

               Dear Sir
                         I reached this city on

yesterday and was very sorry to learn that you had left. My principal business to take steps to en- sure my exchange. I think I have got every thing in a promising condition now, and I hope in 20 days to be free from Lincoln's shac- kles. I shall then be ready for service. The condition of my leg is such, that I can never hope to stand marching on foot, and in the reorganization of my old Company obsta- cles have gotten in the way of my taking charge of it on horseback. I know not whether you can furnish me any position in Floyd's Army that will permit me to have a horse, or whether I can serve the Commonwealth in that Army in any capacity, that will not require me to travel on foot, but if you have any such within your gift, I should be glad to receive it at your hands. I am desirous of doing something for the Cause, and if you can assign me any position I shall ever remember it with gratitude. My great desire to be engaged is my reason for making this direct application to you. I hoped to have met Gen Echols here, and to have gotten into his Staff, but he is gone and I presume his appointments are all filled. If you can do any thing for me please advise me at as early a day as possible so that I may seek employment in some other way, if not in the on of my first choice.

                  Yours Truly, D P Curry

I desire some subordinate position, so that great responsibility shall not rest upon me. I was rather serve under some good man than to have the entire charge of men upon me. D P Curry
