January 8th Wednesday. Went to Richmond
in my buggy to see my aunt RBN
who hurt herself badly by a fall from
her chair a few days ago. My mother's
niece and Miss Betsy and brother
Thomas came down on 9th.
Saturday 11th Jany. I came home-reach
ing there at dark.
Sunday 12. Called [?] Mann Fleming
who had returned home from Yankee
land-found he had gone to T.B.,
where I went and dined with Stanard,
M. Fleming, Logan & R. Harrison.
Monday. Stanard (W.B.) T.B. and family
dined with me. Stanard spent the night
with me.
Tuesday 13. [3 in 13 struck through and replaced with 4] Snowed last night. Commenced
digging ice house on hill 16 x 16 at Top.
10 x 10 bottom. 16 feet deep. Drove
Stanard to P. Allan‘s. I came home to din=
ner.
Wednesday 14. [4 in 14 struck through and replaced with 5]Hailed and rained last night
drisling all day. wrote to night enclosing
draft on Deane, Hohan & James to John N Gor
don & Son $29.91 in full to date.

January 16 Thursday. Bright day snow melted
fast all day hardly freezing at bed time.
4 hands digging ice house to day. Henry
Eustace called this morning on his way from
Richmond-went to Rand. & Harrison’s. I drove
down to Dogtown this evening.
Jany. 17 Friday. Logan & Mann Fleming came and
took dinner with me. Dr. & Mrs Harris came
up to night in our carriage.
Jany. 18 Saturday. Rainy day. Dr & Mrs Harris here
to dinner. I went by invitation to Mann F‘s & din
ner. Logan, P. Allan & T.B. there-weather
quite warm all day.
Jany 20 Monday went to C.H. dined and staid all
night with Dr Harris as a heavy storm of thunder
lightning and rain came up in evening and
lasted all night.
“ 21. Came home to dinner Dr. H. came with
me to see Mrs Belling- Mr. W.P. Eliason

me-tried to get me to insure in James

23 Henry up first killing of hogs-and smoked

Dr. Harris came to night to see Mrs Bolling
Bad night
24 Snowed this morning-and hailed &
snowed all day. Cold and sleety &
dark & windy tonight. Hope Yankee Doo-
dledom may be roughly used about
Hateras and Cape Fear to night.

25 Saturday went to Mann Fleming’s house to dinner
T.B. & children dined here. Dr & Mrs. Harris came
in evening spent night with us.
26 Sunday. Dr. & Mrs Harris left after breakfast.
I drove to La Vallee to see Robert Vaughan
Vaughan who is very sick with Pneumonia [?]
27 Monday. Killed my last hogs 25 in
number. after scalding and cleaning
there gradually came over the skin

think the most probable cause is the rust
of the kettle in which they were scalded
as they appear to be perfectly healthy
liver &c all right. finished dig-
ging ice house in hill. I shall go
to Island to dinner today-weather dark
threatning rain.
28th Jany. Tuesday-Cut out the meat I
killed on yesterday & salted Total weight
of my hogs this winter 84 in number
is 17190 lbs , more than I ever
killed before—average of hogs 204 lbs.
Drove after dinner to La Vallee
R. Vaughan’s situation still very
critical. Dr Julien Kean & Dr Wm
Morris there. W. Ferguson & Mrs. Grattan
there.
29th at home all day drying up lard
day clear, & warm as spring.
30th. Thursday-Rained most last night
today stark warm sometimes rainy.

sermon from Rev’d Wm Mortimer , about
25 persons there my wife too poorly
to go. Found T.B & children here when
I got home. day clear.
5th Wednesday- W. Ferguson dined with me.

which with snow that fell on
has made the ground I think wetter than
I ever saw it.
7th. Drove to Lock [Lomund?]-paid postage

This is the Day of the Inauguration of
our First President of the New
Nation “The Southern Confederacy”?- The day
is rainy cloudy and unpromising-not
unfitting the state of Public feeling produced
by the sad Defeats which have befallen
our arms at Roanoke Island and
Fort Donelson. The first the consequences
of gross imbecility—the Second—
of I know not what—but I think
it will prove to be from the Folly and sin
of said Generals as Floyd the Robber and
Pillow the politician and
The signs of the times are every where
dark & cheerless-all the Power of a mighty
people is about to overwhelm us-If our
people are earnest & If [underlined twice for emphasis] God be with us
we will weather the storm. I have

see W.P. Holland who is sick-Just as
I got there a most violent sound
burst forth from the West- I drove
home by Selden’s passing falling trees
storm lasted till about 5 P.M

Feb. 27 Dined at Bollings Island. M. Fleming

Feb. 28 Friday-Drove this morning to T.B’s
and [Malm?] Hobsen is back to dinner-

March 2 Sunday. Unpleasant drisly day. Mr. Kean (Napoleon)
came by to say that he was appointed to draft half
of men negroes between 16 years & 50 to work
for Confederacy at Mulberry Island below Williams
burg. I walked with him to Fontaine
3rd-I had company to dinner. Mann Fleming, [?]
H. T. Bolling, Wm Kean & I.W. Logan.
4th-Drove to Dogtown-when I came back found
John Colly very ill with I think congestive
chill. Juniors W. & Wilmer & Charly M. came this [morn?]
5th Wednesday John Colly Died this morning
Ash Wednesday. I at home all day-
till eveng. Drove Dr. H. to Selden’s gate went
by to see Selden.
6th Thursday-went to Cedar Point with my
hands who left there for Mulberry Island

Blackberry Wine—
Press the berries(Black or Dewberry, through
a sieve—To one gallon of the juice
put 1 quart of water & 4 lbs of
best brown sugar—let it stand
36 hours in an open vessel.
(I presume in a cellar or cool room.)
Stirring often and skimming off
scum—then put into DemiJohn
or cask cork loosely—on 1st
November draw off part in bottles
and cork tightly.

October 10th—I made a bargain
with Holman Prior about cleaning
out the first long ditch running
from Woodville line down to Creek
about 1500 yds long—being shortest
of the two long ditches. He is clean
out thoroughly leaving it in as good
order in regards to depth and other
things as when he cleaned & deep-
ened it about 3 years ago +--
He is to supply his hands with loose
tools &c—and I am to pay
