Johnson's Island Ohio Sept. 27 1864

My Dear Brother, I have never heard a word from you since the 15th of Aug. On this 13th Sept. I was captured on Picket near Winchester, and arrive[...] [...] this place on the 23rd. How long I will remain before exchange is more tha[...] can guess, but fancy it will be long enough. Capt: Ed Peery, and a good m[...] from Tazewell are here. Col. Davis of the 45th also. I am looking daily for [...] more of my acquaintances captured in the Valley. I am in good health, and [...] doing as well as I can expect. I lost everything when I was captured_ My h[...] and all my clothes. I have not a change with me. I will write again soo[...] if I cannot get them here will get you to send me a few things by express. my best love to sister Lavalethe and the children, and to Letty when you [...] to her: and give me all the news you can, but do not write me more than one side of a paper. If you are again at Charlottesville. When you do send me a [?] I will want some smoking and chewing tobacco, and 1 Shirt. 1 pr. drawers, [...] 2 pr. woollen socks.
