Austin Jan 25th 1864
Maj John Tyler,
Sir, Your letter informing one
of the safe arrival of yourself, & friend at Headquar- ters, was received a week ago. Have waited in vain to gather some important items of news, knowing that you were so much interested in the people of Texas. Fortifications are going on rapidly around Austin. The place is under martial law. "You will not be able to hide hour light under a bushel." If you are correctly understood, let one assure you, there is an effort made to observe any light, but it is blazing as brightly as possible, upon a small elevation. There has as yet been an action taken since your departure, with regard to "your "[Goliey?]." The weather has been too remarkably disagreeable for one to ride, & I have had no opportunity to converse with Gov. [Mairah?]. As soon as anything is done either of a private or official nature, I will advise you. - Accept the compliments, & kind wishes of myself, & "household."
