Dear Sister

Your kind and loveing letter was received some days ago. I need not tell you that I was happy to know that you were well, And that you remember your Brother. I was in hopes that I would get a letter from Hannah as I wrote to her the same mail as yours, but I have not yet. Through yours I know she is well and happy. I havent much news to write. Things go on the same old way here. But I think there is some chance for a little excitement soon. Some days ago there was a request made by Comodore Porter for 20 Volunteers to go on some secret expedition. I registered my name. And if it comes off I will have a chance for a little fun and gunpowder.

Yesterday was Thanksgiveing down here. Was it in your country, it was a beautiful day, But no turkey for dinner. I heard that there was a thanksgiveing dinner coming down for us but it has not yet made its appearance, And dont think it will, at least to the men, if it comes it will be all taken by the Officers, And the men left to smell of the bones. I have had one pretty good dinner since I have been out. We were in Beaufort N.C. about two weeks ago and I managed to get ashore. I went into an old niggers house, and had a regular Southern dinner. I dont know what it was made of but it was good.

You speak in your letter of a lady of Jamaica K.B. I know very well who you mean and she is a good girl and has all my respect, but I have not been so happy as to hear from her since I have been in the navy.

I must now close with my Love to Uncle and Aunt. Tell Hannah I wrote to her and will again the next opportunity I have. I will also write to Uncle Silas soon. Remember me to all.

And I remain your Brother Oh, I forgot your picture. Send it by all means.
