Dear Sister & Brother
Haveing nothing to do this morning & thought i could not improve my leisure moments better than by writeing a few lines to you hopeing they will find you all in better health and prosperity than when i heard from you last. I am perfectly well and lazy as ever with the exception of one toe which is sore and very lively. We are on the look out for the Merrimac which is expected to run the blockade every day, the troops at Newport news sleep on their arms and last night we laid awake expecting to hear the long roll every minute yesterday afternoon we were startled by the rapid discharge of canon from the watter battery the cry was raised that the merrimac was comeing in two minutes the ramparts were crowded but they were all nicely Sold for they were only dischargeing the pieces that was loaded over night. So we had to go to our quarters without the gratification of seeing a sea fight.
Mr. Smith
I received a letter from Fred yesterday and he told me that oweing to a difficulty with a member of the ABA the name has been changed to one that i think is more appropriate and dignified. i hope it will prosper as well under its new [cognomen?] as it did before. it is true i cannot enjoy its benefits but i shall be proud to be considered an honorary member.
I have wrote to uncle
Sam and Farther and
have not heard a word from
them but perhaps they did not
receive my letters, i shall
write again Soon.
Fred told me that you directed
a letter for Susie i have not
got it yet. i wonder if fred
is Susie's private secretary. do
you know i'm aware that its
nearer for her to go around navy
St. but (by darn) i'm suspicious.
Sposin i close
Your Affectionate
Brother
Andrew Weeks
