Choir and Chorus Melodize Tonight

BY BETTY GAYLE SANFORD

For its annual Spring Concert, the William and Mary Choir and Chorus will feature church music and show tunes this evening and tomorrow at 8 p. m. in Phi Beta Kappa auditorium.

The curtain will rise over the Choir and Chorus as they present "Psalm 100" by Schuetz. The psalm, composed for a choir with an echo chorus, provides a change from the usual church compositions. The song of the choir is intermittently interrupted as the echo chorus answers.

The "Agnus Dei" by Pergolesi follows the psalm and contains a variety of melodies and tones. Next on the program are "Sicut Cervus" and "Exultate Deo" by Palestrina.

The Chorus continues the church music with "Fragments from the Mass" by Diemer, "Ave Maria" by Kodaly and "My Spirit Be Joyful" by Bach.

The spotlight will then be centered upon Dorothy Tudor, soloist, and the Choir as they present "In the Beginning," written in 1947 by Copland for the Harvard Symposium on Contemporary Music.

"Oh Rise, Shine!", a Negro spiritual, launches the second appearance of the Chorus. THe last two numbers of this portion include "A Blossom Falls" by Ravel and "Maleguena" by Lecuona.

The Choir concludes the concert with selections from Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story" score. "I Feel Pretty," "One Hand, One Heart," "Maria," and "Somewhere" from a medley. Gene Gelusha, Bill Overacre and Sammy Sadler will be featured in "Gee, Officer Krupke!" Sue Sager is the piano accompanist for the performance.

Admission for the concert is $1 per person. Tickets may be purchased from any member of the Choir or Chorus and from Schmidt's Music Shop.

Selection from "The Sound of Music" by Rogers and "Hey, Look Me Over" from Coleman's musical "Wildcat" will be part of the program.
