Aug 28th 1865

My dear Major,

After a much longer sojourn in southern Virginia than I ex- pected, we (Mrs J. & Myself) have at last reached this place.

While [........] I be- gan such a narrative as you sug- gested - & am, in it, about halfway tho' my military career. I am not attempting to use to the dig- nity of history - but [.....] coupling my self to the style of a military, report.

report. I should be grateful for any further suggestions you can make - especially for any thing you may have liezure to write on the subject of the [commpa-?] [?] in Tennessee in 1863 & in Georgia in 1864.

We [......] many of my papers in Va. will compell me to be briefer than I should write - but there is no help for that.

The friendly interest you have expressed makes me feel sure that I need not apologize for
