Bedford Co. Va Aug. 23rd 1865

Dear Arthur, A little over four months have Elapsed since we parted on the hills in Appomattox with mutual pledges of eternal friendship and a regular correspondence and here am I in old Bedford within two hundred miles of you and dont even know whether you are (lively?) or dead. Well if you are living I (know?) how + do sympathise with you. if you are dead I congratulate you but be you dead or living you will please do me the kindness to comply with you promise + write to me (immeadiately?) for... Arthur I had rather hear from you to day that to hear from my Sweetheart.
