Charlotte Dec 28th 1863.

My darling Nina,

I am a little doubtful whether you & Rebecca went to-day to Charlottesville as the weather was so unfavorable here this morning. I have been looking with some anxiety for it to clear up, as [Hattie?] wrote me she would be here to-morrow, if she went to [?] [?] last Thursday - that depended on how cold it was on Wednesday - I have not heard whether she is at the Booker's. She was to go with Mrs. Miles Hobson[?] to Mrs. Booker's (Miss [Minnie?] Booker's father) 8 miles to be pres. there on Thursday to [Amelia?] [?] [?]to miles in Mrs. Booker's carriage which was to go there to meet her daughter. So then she said she would be only about 2 hours ride as its east from [?] where Horace would meet her - but it would depend on the weather - if it was as cold as it was when she wrote on Sunday, she would say quiet at home & only [give?] one week's holiday. Fanny Harris had pressed her to spend part of her time with her if she did not elsewhere. So she had promised to do so. Much as I am afraid of the journey for her in the [?], I confess I [should?] be very glad if she has come [?] [?] [?] with much anxiety for her to [?], & shall feel greatly disappointed if she does not come.

Fred has just handed me a letter from Hatty and she is in [Powhatan?]. She went to Mrs. Booker's on [?] [?], but found it so bitter cold that she concluded she had better not go any further as she would have [to stay all day?] left the next morning in a buggy. So she returned to [Doctor?] [?] and wrote me on Thursday night, nay twice, as the rides had made her very sick. If it was not too cold the next day (Christmas day) she would go to Church & return home with Mrs. Harris to stay a few days. I hope she did so. I feel much disappointed both on her account and my own, but should I think it was not best, for a ride of ten miles in an open buggy, so early in the morning might have laid her up, particularly as she has just had such a very bad cold. You and Rebecca must write to her as soon as you can and remind your Father that she will be feeling particularly lonely now
