Powhatan County

Apl 2/63

My darling,

I am now where it seems prob

able I shall have a home for some months

& am very desirous of having one of the

most acceptable proofs of it in the reminicing

of such family intercourse as is allow-

ed us. I am rather lonely here as you may

suppose cut off from you all & all strange

around me & feel the & feel the want of letters.

It is a long time since I have had one

from you. You will therefore as soon

as practicable write me a cheery one.

I have formed an engagement for a school

here, which was to have begun on the

1st of April. I find however upon my arri

val that they have just begun to build the

school house. Like many big enterprises, it pro

gresses slowly. It is promised however that

it will be ready next week. The only trouble

in my situation yet developed is that

the school house will be two miles off.

The distance secures me exercise but is

rather too great. I board at present with

Mr. Michaux, a wealthy gentleman

who lives in great comfort & seems with

his family kindly disposed. He has a beau

tiful estate on James River. The coun

try around is I think the most beautiful

I have seen. The river, the rich low

grounds along its course, the gently [?]

[?] hills, the goochland heights op

posite & the [?] scattered about

on them make an attractive picture. I am

very anxious to hear that Mother has arrived safe

ly at a comfortable house. I shall as soon as

I can see if one can be procured for her with

or near me. I have not yet seen [Jno?] Powell he

is 8 miles from here. I hope to do so soon & engage

him to help me. These are trying times that

we must summon our fortitude & trust & pray

that God will soon again gather us [?]

cle Frank is perplexed. He has to give up his

house. His family will go to Charlote if they can
