The Choir of The COLLEGE of WILLIAM and MARY

Williamsburg Virginia

THE COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY IN VIRGINIA was chartered in 1693 by the joint British sovereigns whose names it bears -- the culmination of nearly a century of off-and-on discussion. The Wren Building, oldest academic building in the United States, was constructed from plans reportedly supplied by Sir Christopher Wren, and for many years it served as living quarters and classroom facilities for the entire college.

Holding a royal charter, with arms granted by the College of Heralds, the College of William and Mary enjoyed the benefits of royal favor combined with the income from duties granted by the General Assembly. The Indian School, endowed from a large estate which Robert Boyle, the great English physicist and dis- coverer of "Boyle's Law," left for "pious and religious uses," was housed in the Brafferton, butilt in 1723 and named for the manor in Yorkshire from which most of the revenue was derived. The Indian School languished, however, and failed to survive the Revolution.

In 1776, Phi Beta Kappa, first Greek letter fraternity, was founded by a group of students at the college. In 1779, the first Honor System was instituted, and the first law school in America was established.
