Abbeville, July 17th 1864
My beloved wife,
I remembered on
yesterday that I failed to enclose a blank
[?] order. That you might be enabled to draw
the [?] on the Bank Stock I wrote to
you on the 14th to 15th [?], to Richmond.
For the event that you can think of any
one who has influence with the Surg Genl,
I would be glad for you to ask them to see
the Surg Genl, and request an [e?tation]
for me to appear before the Med Board
either at Charleston or Richmond, for [?] [?]
I have here to form, re[?] from making
application, for fear that I might be refused
I have heart of [?] appreciations being [?]
[?] recently. It may be that they are greatly
[?] now to go before the Board, as I
see by the newspapers that our [?] are
in [?] of Medical offices. If you should
not happen to select the right person, I feel
confident of failure. all of these things
are now granted as [?] [?], must
I fear has little to no with it. Do not think
for a moment of asking Dr. P. I hope that
[P.2]
I have no undis[?] feelings to [?] new,
but whenever I think of him, ["of ?" is crossed out] an in
voluntary feeling of loathing and disgust will
creep over me. I do not want him [however]
[?] the contratry, I hope that the may recover
from his attack of sickness, and become
a better man. You must keep very quiet
on this respect. I mean about my expectations
mention it to no one, unless, they [crossed out] you think
^they can aid you, and all of it, if you cannot
think of a suitable person to make applications
for me, and I will make application
[?] to the Surg Genl by letter.
Your speaking of your [?] to the needle,
reminded me that the [?] of my sheets
and collars will [?] me to put some
body needle on [?]. I was about
to day, that I did not care that, but I do care.
I think that a short [?] by you would feel
decidedly more comfortable (provided it fit) ["provided it fit" is underlined]
than one made by other hands. Can you de[?]
after [?] all a[?]? I hope that our boy
has improved, bless his heart. Love to all
enquiring friends. Write soon.
Your devoted
Husband
