Mildred crossed her t's with a dash over the following letter. For example, what looks like "latir" is actually "later" because the t's crossing is over the 'e.' This pattern shows up in most other words as well where a t precedes a vowel. Her capital Ws also look like Hs, like how 'Walter' looks like 'Halter'
