via [steamer] Quebec 5 Hanover St[reet] [New York, NY] 20 August [18]63 – 3 p.m.

Dear Ann – I have already sent you one short letter for this steamer from Quebec [underscored]; and having seen W[illia]m about 1/2 an hour after it was posted, I must now send you another for the satisfaction of telling you that all was going on quite well with Walker up to 8 a.m. today [double underscored] – that being the hour at which W[illia]m daily leaves Orange [NJ] to come to town. – He has now

                                   \from me & others – Tobin’s included. -

gone back again armed with a quantity of letter from Cornwall [NY] &

An outer bandage was taken off yesterday at noon, before W[illia]m got back to Orange: - & the rest was removed entirely, so as to expose every part of the wound, at 8 p.m. yesterday; - aiding & assisting in various ways, W[illia]m & Sarah, & a young man called Henry Thompson, who sleeps in a room adjoining Walker’s, & has been most kind all throughout. – Walker suf= =fered some pain during the process of unbandaging, washing dressing & re-bandaging: - but it was not very severe: and he saw [underscored] the wound, taking a good look at it, [taking...it’ underscored] like all the rest, all fixed up afresh, he went to sleep about 9 p.m.: & slept without intermission (as W[illia]m believes) until 6 a.m. – Besides the first passage from his bowels, on Tuesday morn[in]g, he had another on Wed[nesday] morn[in]g, & a third this morn[in]g.

W[illia]m went to D[octo]r Wilkes this morning & described exactly all that he saw, & all the symptoms; & the D[octo]r expressed himself entirely satisfied therewith. –

I am sorry to learn, however, that the amputation is much nearer the elbow than the hand – just in the thickest part of the lower arm. –

There was a letter yesterday from Ja[me]s of the 11th – 4 days later than the previous one: & he had been very anxious about Louisa from her being in a fever! [underscored] At 2 p.m. he adds a p[ost] s[cript] to say that the unfavorable symptoms were abating.
