Tuesday 11th
Wind SW &E. Clear. Ploughing Two Ploughs. Hauling out
and scattering Manure. Making fence.
Our Iron clad Steamer Virginia late the Merimac came from
The Navy Yard Saturday night to Hampton Roads, and sunk the
US Frigate Cumberland, Burnt the US Frigate Congress and
*captured the US Steamer Minnessota*. She subsequently had
an encounter with US Iron Clad Steamer Erricson which she
damaged & drove under the guns of Fortress Monroe. The Virginia
is said to be uninjured. She must be a grand success
*This is not correct the rest is, The Minnessota was badly hurt but not taken

Wednesday 12
Wind W Clear. Began to sow Oats, sowed 10 1/2 Bushels
Hauling out & Scattering Manure. Younger & Nick cutting wood
Lucy sick with cold & fever. Three little negroes have the measels.
Charleys Throat & Mouth dreadfully ulcerated & he is quite sick

Thursday 13
Wind E Cloudy & rained in Ev.g. & at night. Sowing Oats
Hauling out & scattering manure. Working in garden.

Friday 14
Wind N & NE Cloudy. Rained last night, land too wet to
Sow Oats but I am sowing the dryest places, threw
back ditch banks. Got 40 bushels of Oats of Selden.

The Militia of the State is called out by Govr Letchr
those from this county are owned to Williamsburg

Saturday 15th
Wind SE Foggy in m.g. Sowed 5 Bushels Oats in mg did
noting in Ev.g. Hauled out Manure in ox Cart in mg.
Several other little Negroes have Measels, some quite sick.

Sunday 16
Wind SE & W. Cloudy. We staid at home.

Monday 17
Wind NW Clear. Sowed Oats. Hauled out Manure
Threw back ditch banks. Planted Potatoes in garden

Tuesday 18
Wind N mg. E aftn Clear Sowing Oats. Hauling out
& Scattering Manure. Newberne NC. has been taken by the Enemy

Wednesday 19
Wind E[underlined] Alternately Clear & Cloudy, very raw & disagreable.
Finished Sowing Oats, sowed 70 Bushels. Hauled out
and scattered manure. The Yankees have occupied Winchester.

Thursday 20
Wind NE Rained all day. shelled corn to sent to Mill
Hauled some wood in Ox Cart & wagon.

Friday 21
Wind SW Clear after 10 O,clk till Ev.g. Then a Thunder cloud
and heavy rain at night. Cut & hauled wood. Threw back
ditch banks. John making Axel Tee for Cart Joshua broke
his To,day. Mary & Richard have the Measels.

Saturday 22
Wind W & NW Cloudy. Cut Wood. Hauled wood in Wagon
Threw back ditch banks. John making Axel Tees. Mr Carney came
& brought cloth home. Daughter quite sick with measels.
