General Orders
No. 36
I. All applications for discharge
made by persons over 35 years of age, who have been
drafted since the 10th of March, 1862, under the
Virginia Laws and assigned to military organ-
izations serving under authority of the Confederate
States will be made by Brigade Commanders.
Regimental & Company Commanders causing
to be made out and signing, the "Soldiers
Discharge" and " Final Statements." required in
all cases of discharge; and papers to indicate
cause for the discharge.
II. In all cases where promotion is
due from seniority, and the competency of the parties en-
titled by position to promotion is questionable, a Board
of Examiners shall be convened by Brigade Com-
manders to determine the candidates capabilities of
instructing and controlling the commands commensurate
with the grade to which promotion is expected, as also
their efficiency, & perfect sobriety. All newly elected
officers will be examined before similar Boards of Examiners
to determine their competency, & the confirmation of the election.

This general order was printed by Mr. D. A. St.Clair (editor) of the Wytheville, Va newspaper. This order probably appeared in the Wytheville Dispatch but was primarily distributed as a broadside. It relates to absentees from the 8th Virginia Cavalry and a deadline for reporting back to their commands before being considered deserters.

The Lt. General commanding asks
the men and officers of the corps to unite with him
in returning thanks to our Heavenly Father for the
the signal success which has [ ] the valor of
this command. In acknowledgement of divine Fai _ _
chaplains will hold religious service in their respective
regiments at such times as may be most convenient.
With wonderful small loss - less than
300 killed wounded and missing, we have carried
strong works defended by an abundance of superior
artillery, capturing over 3000 prisoners and a large
quantities of military stores and supplies. Such
a result should strengthen the reliance in the
righteousmess of our cause which has inspired every
effort of our troops.

The battle took place on June 13-15 and cleared the Valley of Union troops and opened Maryland and Pennsylvania to invasion. The Battle of Gettysburg is less than three weeks away.)

By the Regulations, Commandants of Regts (regiments)
are now responsible for all ordnance & ord:
stores in their respective Commands & are required
assisted by their ord: Sergeants, to make out &
forward the necessary returns.
You will please call attention to the Reg-
ulations in this Respect.
