Mt. Pleasant July 31st 1862

My Dear Sister
Your letter was received last Sunday & relieved
us of a great deal of anxiety. It had been so long since we
had heard from you that we were sure that some of you
were sick. We had heard several rumors of Brother Nat being
at home & heard too that he had been discharged & as we
haven't gotten a letter from him for some time we were
afraid he was sick. I wrote to him as soon as I got home from
Brother Will's & don't know why he don't write unless it is
because he takes all of his time to write to you. You don't
know what compliments he pays you & your letters when he
writes to us. Brother Dick has been quite sick & wasn't
well when we heard from him. We feared he would
have fever & he seemed afraid his lungs were effected a
gain. He tried to get a furlough to come home but could
not as so many of the company were at home but the surgeon
told him if he got any worse he would send him home.
I went down to Mrs. Dupey's last week & brought Mollie up
here & kept here a day or two. She didn't bring the children,
but Mrs. D came for her & brought Emurie. Minnie is so sweet
& pretty & runs every where & talks very plain. Mrs. Dupey has
a cousin Mr. George Dupey refugees & his wife & Sister living with her
& Minnie calls Mr. D. papa all the time. Sister Sue's little
babe has been very sick for more than a week we have been
very anxious about her. She seems a little better today, but is
still in a critical situation. We sit up with her every night.
The rest are well except some of the servant who have measles. There is a great deal of sickness through the
country. Scarlet fever, roseola, measles, & fever. Scarlet fever has
been very fatal about Charlotte C.H. Brother was here yesterday
just from Mr. [Hensdlegs?] Charles has a slight attack of fever.
John Venable has been at home sick ever since the battles before
Richmond he had bowel disease & Brother thinks it has

turned to fever. Millie was at brothers whe he left home he says
she has a fine beautiful boy but he doesn't walk yet. He is just
the age of Mollies Minnie. I want to see you & your little ones
so much. If I could get any body to go with me I would certain
ly go over & stay a while with you. Hal Edmunds was here
last week & staid a day or two here & at Mrs. Dupey's but I didn't think of it while
he was here. Brother Will's folks are well last sunday except
Mattie, she had a sore throat but it was slight. I suppose
you have heard of Willie Scott death. I haven't heard any of
the particulars nor have I heard from Abe since Fannie & [S...?]
went up. Daniel Spencer died last friday his leg was never
taken off. Capt. Wall is getting well says he is going back in
the army as an engineer. Dr. Dabney is at home sick.
Scott Green was very badly wounded but it is thought he
will recover. He is at Dr. Purgears. Cousin Paulina Purgear
lost her baby not long ago which makes four children she
has lost in the course of a year with diptheria. She has only
two now. Ma & I went to Briery last sunday & heard James
Wharey Mr. W. Brother. he is a very fine preacher. Some peo
ple like him better than Tom but I like Tom the best.
We have had a very nice little Methodist preacher staying
in this neighborhood Mr. Lindsay. he is chaplain at Randolph
Macon. He staid here a day or two & we liked him very much
he is a very fine preacher too, only 20 years old. We like our
Refugees very much don't think we could have picked any
better if we had had the choosing. The crops of corn in this
neighborhood are fine the oats were very sorry & very little wheat.
Mr. Redd has a tolerable crop of wheat if the constant rains
don't make it sprout. Brother Dick's wheat was very good.
Oh Nannie I do want to see you & talk some with you so
much. Poor little Frankie is crying she has six teeth
& two more almost out & she isn't eight months old yet.
Give much love for me to all at your Pa's. Cousin [Abrams?]
Jr Wilson's & Mr. Hines. How is Bob [McCarnide?]. I will write
to Brother Nat in a few days though I hardly know where
to write. Tell Pattie & Millie it would give me great pleas
ure to see them over here. Kiss Charley & Mollie ever to many

times for me & tell Charly I am very glad to hear that he can behave so
well in church. Willie Eggleston has been twice & as soon as they begin to
sing he begins to cry & cries so they have to take him out. Lou Booker is
now in Charlotte on a visit I reckon she is thinking about turning out.
Ma is as well as usual spits a little blood occasionally. She Sister Sue & all
join me in love to you. Your own sister Pattie.
