August 1862

Wednesday 27

Wind S Cloudy. Rained at night Hauling out & Scattering Farm Pen
Manure. Cleaning out ditches. Sent Joshua & James
and my Mules to assist Mr Sinclair in Threshing his Wheat.

I started to go to the Ct house but called by Mr
Sinclair’s & while there saw a large force of Yankee Cavalry
probably 125 pass his gates on their way here. I immediately
returned & overtook them. They said they were simply
on a scout and were not after any thing or any body
in particular. They looked around here for about 15 or 20
minutes & then left. Some of the Men went into the
dairy & stole some Milk, Melons & a cold ham, but others
of them them humbly asked for bread or any thing else to eat
and said they were nearly starved. They had three Negro
Boys with them as guides. One belonged to Fielding Taylor
I did not know the other Two. About an hour after
the Cavalry left a large Gun boat came up Severn
River, and slowly steamed up to Mr Bryan’s when some of
the Crew landed. The Cavalry which left here were there.
I do not believe they disturbed any thing. They stayed there
about 2 hours when Gun Boat Cavalry & all left.
