Wednesday 24th

Wind SE Clear in m.g. A thunder cloud in Ev.g & rain
about 3 O,clk. Pulling Fodder. It seems an endless Job.
I went to the Ct House (Mail day) Jackson took
Harpers Ferry Sunday 14th Inst with upwards of Eleven Thousand
men Prisoners & their small arms, 73 pieces Cannon, Stores and Camp
and field equipage &c with very small loss to us.
There was awfully severe fighting in Maryland all last week with
I fear the loss of many valuable & noble Gentlemen to us. The Yankees as
usual claim victories, but our accounts which I believe True are just
the contrary, certainly up to Wednesday night on which day the
largest & most sanguinary battle occured at or near Sharpsburg. We were Victorious.
There was a grad battle near Middletown on Friday which
we are said to have decidedly won & McClellans Army to be in
full retreat to Frederick Town & Lee in hot persuit. I trust tis so
have been
Col Fielding L Taylor of 12th Va Regt is report to have been severely if
not fatally wounded on the 14th Inst at a Mountain Pass in Maryland
near Harper;s Ferry. I trust it may not be so bad, as his loss will
be perfectly stunning to his family and be mourned by this whole commun=
=nity by whom he was universally hououred and loved
Dr Cary came to see Charley who is sick. Mr Coleman & Sister Ann & Martha dined here
I lost a fine ox.
