Tuesday 6

Wind W Cloudy. Rained after 12 O,clk Cut down stalks
Making chimney & cramming Martha’s house.
A Yankee Gun Boat came up the River To.day. Two Barges with
about 15 or 20 men came ashore and Stole my Beef which was
out in the Field not far from my house. I talked very plainly
to the officer who seemed very much ashamed of himself but
said he was ordered to take it and was compelled to obey.
Sent two ladies Mrs White & Mrs Hunt of York County to Capahosic
They came here yesterday and are trying to get to Fredericksburg to see
their husbands who belong to the 32nd Regt.

Wednesday 7

Wind NW Clear and cold. Cut down hauled & Ricked Stalks.
Got wood in Wagon. Younger & Joshua about the Chimney.
I wnet to CH (mail day). Rosencrans has been heavily
reinforced & Bragg has fallan back from Murfreesboro bringing
with him the 4000 prisoners, 30 pieces of Artillery & 8000 small arms
taken in the late battle. The Yankee “Iron Clad” the famous
“Monitor” was lost at sea the other day on her way to Charleston
& the “Gelena” had throu over her Armament ot be saved.
the Enemy have been again repulsed & driven back from
Vicksburg after repeated assaults....
